Why I Picked ItSo, I'd heard from friends that I really needed to watch the show, but I hadn't gotten around to it yet. So when I saw this book brand new at the local Goodwill store (my favorite bookstore), I picked it up. I'm not joking, it took me less than 24 hours to read it. I had just finished Off the Page earlier in the night and didn't think I was going to start another book, I just had it ready to go to my fiancé's for the weekend and I'd start it there while he was working on studying for midterms. No. Instead I told myself," I'll just read the introduction and get a good idea of what's happening." And then I couldn't put it down. 2 hours later I was exhausted and knew I needed to go to bed, but I just kept reading. Finally I put it down until I woke up and read a couple more chapters while eating breakfast and getting ready for work. So by the time I got to Corgan's that night, we went to dinner and hung out a bit, and then I let him do a couple assignments while I finished the last 4 chapters. He may have been a little disappointed that I wouldn't put it down, but at the same time he knows me well enough to just let me be! SummaryIf you aren't already aware of the basis of this story, a high school girl committed suicide, and she decided to send tapes to people who said or did things that ultimately made up her mind. Hence the name of the book. So anyway, we are reading what the narrator, one of the tape recipients who was in love with Hannah, is doing, hearing, and feeling as he listens to the tapes. Each side of each tape talks specifically about a different person in Hannah's life who did or said something that made a bigger difference to Hannah than they originally had thought. Her main reasons for these tapes was not necessarily to blame them (though I'm sure that's what some people feel like she was doing), but to let them know that their actions had consequences to others. I'm not going to go into much more details because I don't want to give anything away. But you should definitely read it for yourself! What I LikedOkay, I obviously got lost in this book since it only took me a few hours to read. There were just so many great things about it! First of all, I LOVED the integration of Hannah's "voice" over the tapes we were reading and the narrator's actions, thoughts, and feelings mixed in. All of Hannah's speaking was in italics and the narrator's was in normal font, so you could tell whose perspective you were reading. And it was so interesting to read back and forth. It really made me feel like I was in the narrator's shoes. Also, I just loved his love for Hannah. You could tell it from the very beginning, and he just knew that it was a mistake that he received these tapes. He loved her. He couldn't have done anything to her to have reason to be on the tape (does he do anything? You'll have to read for yourself ;) ). I also loved the characters. Hannah's voice just really got to me. I loved her, and I really wanted to know what made her feel how she did about her life. I needed to know what happened to her to make her want to take her own life. Not that I understood it completely, but I think that the book definitely brings a TON of things to light. Topics that are EXTREMELY difficult. So I caution in reading this book. There were a couple times I had to just set down the book and breathe a bit before digging back in. And I definitely cried a couple of times. But I still loved Hannah's attitude and her humor, no matter how dark it was at times. I also loved the few other characters you actually get to interact with in the book. They were all so real and I could almost put myself in their shoes, even though I've never been in near the same situation as any of them. There was just SO MUCH that I loved about this book. What I didn't LikeI FELT LIKE IT TOOK FOREVER TO GET TO THE NARRATOR'S TAPE. And even though I hated that part, I also loved that it was more toward the middle, because it kept me guessing as to why he was on the tapes in the first place (just like what he was doing). There really was not a lot I didn't like. There were moments that were hard to read, but I was also expecting that with already knowing a bit of what it was about. But otherwise, it was just so good. Overall Impression 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟5 Stars. 5 Stars, 5 stars. There would be no other rating for this book in my opinion. I obviously loved it, and I couldn't find a lot wrong with it. I really just loved so many different aspects of the book, and I hope you read it and see what I mean. Jay Asher did a great job, and I can't wait to find my next read!
