Why I picked it I follow Carly Stevens on Instagram and her blog, and I had seen her hype up her debut novel. The idea of a world where some people have a Talent that allows them to create worlds and items and fight within layers of their consciousness was just so intriguing to me. Carly gave out a few ARCs of Firian Rising, and I was fortunate enough to get a copy!! summaryIn a divided kingdom, Firian wants nothing more than to leave his family to attend the Tanyu Academy and develop his Talent. When he is finally accepted, he tries to work his way up the ranks. On his way to the top, he learns that the Academy isn't all it seems. Kiria is next in the Second Line to take over as Keeper and assist in leading her country. Unfortunately, the war puts her in danger. Firian is tasked to protect her, and the lies both of them are being told end up tearing them apart. They have to decide whether they trust in one another or trust their people what i liked Like I said in the "Why" section, I really was intrigued by the whole idea of this novel. It's unique, and I loved diving into this new world. Firian is an interesting character and he goes through some development throughout the book. I like seeing him learn more about the Tanyu world and the force he is a part of. I also like his determined personality that isn't willing to give up on his dreams. Kiria also goes through some major developments. She learns that she has a couple of unique abilities as she grows, and she has to gradually learn how to use them to better be a Keeper of her kingdom. She also goes through this middle school girl rebellious stage where she shirks her lessons and her duties to hang out with boys and her friends. Eventually, she realizes the seriousness of her duty and then dives fully back into her Kepress duties. There's also a lot obviously happening in the background that we don't see, too. Which could be bad, but I actually kind of enjoyed it. It leaves this sense of mystery, because much of what isn't told to us doesn't leave out the important details, but it shows that there is a lot happening, and Carly Stevens does a good job of alluding to some of the periphery action without lengthening the book with unnecessary detail. There is a lot of action in this book, and the timeline spans a few years so you get to see both Kiria and Firian at different points in their life, development, and journey. I like this because you still get the important details, but it moves things forward a little quicker. Another thing I really enjoy with the book is that it wasn't too predictable. I feel like there are a lot of debut novels that don't have enough originality, so they follow tropes and predictable storylines. Carly Stevens does a good job of bringing a whole new idea into the YA fantasy realm. what i didn't likeIf you consistently read my blog (or as consistently as I post on it…), you know that I really like worlds that are fleshed out and fully understandable. Carly has created such a beautifully intricate world that I love, but there is just so much to try to understand. I think it would have helped if the book would have included a glossary of terms and names (because boy, her names are so creative, but sometimes hard to remember and pronounce!) as well as a map. I think that these additions to the book would just help clear up some things for me and help me to understand and appreciate the world more. Maybe that's something that she will work on eventually. There also seems to be so many different cultures within this one fairly small world, and I'd love to learn more about the different cultures and personalities of these races. overall impression 🌟🌟🌟🌟Overall, I really enjoyed this book! I think it was well done, and I already can't wait for the sequel. I'm hoping that there will be some more world building and clarification in the next novel. Apparently Carly is already about halfway through the first draft of the sequel, and I'm excited for the new twists and turns that will come with the next piece. I truly recommend checking out this new book and author!
